RPA-18 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)
BackWhat is the RPA-18 LRTP?
The Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) is a foundational document used by Regional Planning Affiliation 18 (RPA-18) to prioritize transportation investments across the region. It outlines the goals, strategies, and projects for enhancing the region’s transportation system over the next 25 years. This plan helps RPA-18 make key funding and policy decisions that foster a multimodal transportation system, addressing the diverse needs of all residents and visitors.
The Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) document is updated every five years; we are currently working on the 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan to be published by November 2025.
RPA-18 is responsible for transportation planning in Harrison, Shelby, and Mills Counties, as well as the non-urban portion of Pottawattamie County. The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) serves as the administrator for RPA-18.
Why is the LRTP Important?
Long-Range Transportation Plans are essential for:
- Identifying and Prioritizing Needs: The LRTP identifies future transportation needs, helping prioritize projects that provide the greatest benefit.
- Ensuring Safety and Efficiency: The plan aims to improve safety and operational efficiency, making travel more reliable and predictable.
- Supporting Economic Growth: A robust transportation system supports economic development and improves quality of life by providing efficient access to jobs, education, medical care, and recreational activities.
- Promoting Sustainability: The LRTP focuses on creating a sustainable transportation system that minimizes environmental impact and accommodates various modes of travel, including public transportation, biking, and walking.
