A trail connection, a master plan for establishing bicycle and sidewalk networks and a study to explore transportation system needs and land use options along the Ft. Crook Road Corridor are among the new projects being considered for federal transportation funding allocated by the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA).
All projects involved are part of MAPA’s Draft FY2022-FY2027 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) which is out for public comment.
The TIP public comment period runs from May 27 to June 23, 2021.
The TIP is a six-year document, updated annually, which documents the progress toward projects that include federal transportation funding. It includes projects such as highway maintenance and expansion, bicycle and pedestrian trail work, Metro Transit projects and aviation projects. The TIP also includes projects led by the Nebraska and Iowa Departments of Transportation during the next four years.
New projects in the TIP receiving Surface Transportation Block Grant funding under the Heartland 2050 mini-grant program include:
- City of Omaha Bike-Pedestrian Master Plan ($200,000) – Plan to establish bike and sidewalk networks for safer, integrated bike and pedestrian routes.
- City of Bellevue Ft. Crook Road Corridor Study ($100,000) – Study to evaluate transportation system needs and land use options for Ft. Crook Road.
New projects receiving Transportation Alternatives Program funding include:
- Carter Lake Trail Connection ($320,000) – 1.7 miles of multi-use trails connecting Carter Lake to existing trails at Kiwanis Park.
New projects receiving FTA Section 5310 funding (for the transportation needs of older adults and disabled individuals) include:
- Region V Services – Gretna/Bellevue ($72,000) – Replacement of one or more vehicles beyond their useful life
- City of Council Bluffs Special Transit Service ($147,200) – New vehicle to replace one beyond its useful life and funding to continue providing services at their usual level
- Intercultural Senior Center – Omaha ($75,000) – Funding for service beyond what the organization has been provided in the past
- New Cassel Retirement Center – Omaha ($303,000) – Funding for service beyond what the organization has been provided in the past and purchase of a new vehicle to replace one beyond its useful life
The public is invited to attend a TIP open house Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 4-5 p.m. at MAPA offices.
